Lima, Peru

From Cusco we got a flight to Lima rather than busing. It is worthwhile keeping an eye on the flights on this route as we got flights for about 80 NZD.

Prior to arriving in Lima the overall opinion from everyone we had talked to was that it was an average city and not to spend much time there so we were not expecting much and only stayed two nights. I regret our short stay because of the bad feedback we had as I really enjoyed Lima. Yes it is just another city but the part that we stayed in was really beautiful and I think it would be a great place to live. We stayed in the Miraflores area at Zig Zag hostel which is a great area to stay. Miraflores is a great choice for travelers interested in gourmet cuisine , culture and museum. The hostel is all organised around charity so it is a good place to stay to support local communities but not the most social hostel.

WHAT TO DO:

Larcomar Mall – shopping mall on the ocean cliff top. Great place to watch the sunset. Heaps of restaurants and bar options as well as fast food options for those on a budget. Wish I had the time to eat in more of the spots here.

The magic water circuit – Watershow park at parque de la reserva. Pretty good water display fountains with lights at night in a big park. Food stalls and lots of people walking around.

Spend a night in Huacachina – from Lima you can catch a four hour bus to a little place called Huacachina (Ica on the bus) which is a desert oasis known for its sand boarding. We spend one night here and stayed in Bananas adventure hostel which is a must do. Here you can go on dune buggies and do sand boarding which are really fun. Not worth staying here more than a night though.

Mario testino museo – Great museum to check out if you are into photography. Good to walk around the area of Barranco as well. We walked here along the boardwalk over looking the ocean from Miraflores.

WHAT TO EAT:

La casa de ceviche – ceviche and seafood restaurant. Really big portions so share a ceviche if you visit this spot. Not the cheapest but pretty tasty. Calle Berlin 317 | Miraflores , Lima 15074 , Peru

Ko Asian Kitchen – Asian fusion inside the Larcomar mall. We treated ourselves to one lunch here and it was well worth it. Delicious asian food just like home. Felt more like mekong baby or similar than a place in the middle of South America. We shared pork buns and then had a pad thai. Av . Malecon de la Reserva 610 | Local 207 , Lima

La Lucha Sangucheria – Sandwich/burger spot dotted all around miraflores. Famous and always busy. Really good meat and simple sandwiches. Bit overpriced for what it is I guess but you need to try it once. Also have a juice menu. We visited the one in Larcomar mall.

Blu gelato – Amazing gelato spot. Do not miss it. 28 De Julio 202, 15063 District of Barranco, Peru
